Graduations begin, Baby on the way, Music in the air
- Student Malong and his wife Helen are expecting a child and we were able to celebrate with most of the EMBA class with them through a Baby shower. They are expecting in mid-May RIGHT before their visa expires and they go home. Pray for safety for the baby and that the baby and mother will be healthy and it can be born early or on time.
- Charis performed in her school concert and did a delightful and passionate job. Jonathan is doing better in school and timothy got commended performance in all subjects in the state tests. Praise the Lord for his blessing.
- Timothy successfully went on his first Boy Scout campout though there was rain, thunder and even a tornado warning along the way… (baptism by fire?)
- Pray for Roy’s Irritable Bowel deal that it will not be a hindrance to ministry here or when we go to Asia. It has been the cause of a couple of cancelled appointments already including a special lunch with a student who wanted to share his food before he goes home

Graduation is near, more health updates and prayer, Asia trip
- Oral surgery for Roy went very smoothly so far. The doctor was able to both take out the old roots and put in the implant in one procedure. Praise the Lord.
- The situation in Ivory Coast seems to be getting better. Continue to pray for the students from there.
- Several students who are from China are taking it upon themselves ot make sure the China part of the Asia trip goes well. Some are taking time off, letting us stay with them, driving us around.
- Pray for our city mobilizer, Jeff who is struggling with his mother’s health. She just found out that her cancer will probably take her life in the next 6 months or so. Pray for wisdom, grace and peace for him and his family.
- Pray for staff member Laurie who is going to have a cortisone shot in her back to receive back pain. Pray that it goes smoothly.
- Pray as we have end of the year parties, etc. Pray for good final connections, sending off and “commissioning” of believers, etc.
- Pray for someone to help pick up furniture during the summer in preparation for the Big howdy welcome events.
- Pray for the Asia trip. We have only 5 weeks before we get on the plane. We have many details to take care of and we are still short financially in terms of paying for the whole trip. Still we know God will provide and he will take care of the details. Still, there are a lot of moving pieces in this trip because we are not taking tours but meeting many friends, visiting a country winding down from a period of uncertainty, etc. Pray also that we can make a schedule that will work so we can meet the many students we know. Pray for people to stay in our house to care for the pets, etc. Pray for the team to step up in ministry while we are gone.
- Pray for the kids as they prepare to finish the school year and prepare for our BIG TRIP. Pray for peace as they hear all kind of stuff about Japan, etc. Pray also that this will be a significant growing experience for them.

Update on illnesses, Passion week, end of the semester stress, national training in Dallas
- We met a really cool couple this week who volunteered with ISI in Colorado and just moved nearby to join the Seed company in Arlington. They wanted to volunteer to help. We are very happy to talk with them with the possibility of helping us out there.
- We had the ICF Easter Party at TCU. C-8 and I were able to celebrate with TCU student our Savior’s resurrection day(See pictures). The students enjoyed playing and taking pictures in the wildflowers (blue bonnets), painting egg, decorating cookies but most important hearing the story of Jesus death and resurrection and the effects of that had on our hosts, the Dodges. God was there and touched us in our relationships.
- This week we hosted the ISI National Basic training and most of our team had the opportunity to be a big part of the one week training of our new staff from around the country. This year we had a fairly experienced crew, mostly former missionaries who will be serving in places like Phoenix, Kansas City, New Jersey and Dallas. It was a real blessing to be a part of it. Our own Derrah Jackson led the whole time and each of our team had some role in the actual training process. The students seemed very open to what we were sharing.
- More information on the illness. Ron Bunyard, our staff partner at UTA and a very dear friend of mine was diagnosed with stage 2 prostate cancer. The biopsy revealed that it is a fast growing 8 graded form. The plan right now is to perform surgery in early June (He need to heal from the biopsy before they can go in). Of course we are all concerned and in prayer. God has been working through this in Ron and his family but it has been hard. His daughter, Sarah is also in the process of graduating from UTA. Pray for God’s grace in the medical, emotional/faith and family area of their lives.
- Roy has oral surgery today. No big deal. Just implants for a lost tooth but pray as he goes under for this.
- Pray for our students as it is the end of the semester and the stress of classes starts to get to them. Pray for God’s peace and grace during this time.
- The saga in Japan continues especially in the area where Roy’s relatives are. Pray for a quick resolution to the nuclear crisis. Pray for wisdom on going to the quake/tsunami/nuclear stricken part of the country to visit family and student friends this summer on our Asia mission trip.
- Pray for the student from the Ivory Coast who have been struggling for a while now as their country is in civil war. The banks have been closed and many of them have had to withdraw from school in the middle of the semester because they don’t have any money to pay tuition and more importantly to live. Pray for patience and mercy on the part of the schools and the Immigration service (ICE). Pray for provision of basic needs. Pray for them as many of their families are leaders in their war and could be affected by what is happening there.

Cold Week, Many Conference Calls, Good news on Micah, Superbowl, Upward and Carl
This week was relatively uneventful… cold… but uneventful. While school was closed again one day because of a proported heavy ice storm (it ended up being a nice snow dusting) and sub-freezing temperatures (that part was true) we adapted and were able to do the things we normally do. I was able to go to my Chinese session. I did a lot of meetings on the phone. We went to a wonderful superbowl party with student friends from both TCU & UTA at our friends, the Moores. We even took T-9′s Upward basketball team that I coach to a TCU basketball game on Wednesday, a day TCU was closed, but the game was still on. It was a good week.- I was able to meet for my Chinese class with my dear international student friend. I feel like I’m drinking from a fire hydrant. Still, I am getting close to my teacher. It is fun.
The TCU Superbowl/Lunar New Year party was a rousing success with probably 30-40 people watching the Superbowl on three large screens at the Moores’ house while we ate from Chinese hot pot. It was especially fun because we also brought some of our UTA student friends and they really connected with their Horned Frog bretheren. A good time was had by all and it built credibility with the students and I think we identified a coupleof people of peace… Oh and we met someone who came from the same small Chinese city that Charis was born.
We were able to take 4 (plus a brother) of my 7 Upward baskeball players to the TCU basketball game. For several, this is their first experience and their eyes were very large. It really built community and trust with the kids. Upwards is a spiritual, outreach oriented basketball league. God is working in the lives of these kids and the team in general teaching them many valuable lessons. There are some very significant personal things happening with these guys and I see my purpose in the team. (even though we haven’t won yet… but that is not the point)- The Tejas meeting went about as well as could be expected. We ended up doing it over the phone and people responded well and a bonding was beginning to happen that will be so valuable when the Tejas retreat (http://isitejas.com) comes along.
- C-7 has sold many many girls scout cookies. Prayer works.

Weird week of Ice and Snow, Superbowl, Space, Phoenix, Parents and Chinese New Year
(See feb pictures including stuff from this post) This has been a weird couple of weeks for us. It started last week with me having to be in Phoenix for some important meetings for the National ISI ministry about discipleship and preparing students for returning home as leaders in Christ and it ends with our family stuck at home on Superbowl weekend (in N Texas) with my parents visiting because of the weather. Here are some of the details…
- Last week I had the special privilege of being in Phoenix for a bunch of meetings to figure out how to improve ISI’s national strategy for discipling students so they can be better difference makers when they go home. While this is a huge value for ISI for all our years, we have felt the need to refine that strategy to make it more of a reality for every student who God moves to follow Him that we have contact with. It was good. We had great progress as we clarified assumptions with each other and put ourselves on the same page of the next steps. Praise the Lord for His Spirit to bring unity.
Before and during the meetings, I had to manage the registration and the Dallas side for Houston Space weekend trip that Jeff Newpher, our Houston colleague, hosts for our Dallas team three times a year. I did not personally go, but our TCU, UTD and UT Tyler campuses sent 30+ students with other volunteers on this trip to Space Center Houston and to home stays nearby NASA. They even got to meet a astronaut who shared his story with Jesus as it relates to his space experience. All reports indicate a great experience had by all with terrific conversations about spiritual and heart things. Prayers were important as the weather coming back was bad but everything turned out okay. The difficulty was in the many last minute changes and moving pieces. Praise God for the outcome of it all.- The all three of the kids were sick last and this week and missed some school but all are better now.
This last week was unusual as my parents arrived on Saturday, the weather took a turn for the worse and so the kids stayed home Tuesday through Friday because of the ice and snow. We had much cabin fever. Still what a blessing for grandparents to have total access for a whole week during what is normally a school week. I love Texas. But the one thing I miss the most of California and the thing that makes me sad is not having my parents near by during this stage of theirs and our kids lives. So this was special. Praise the Lord for His planning. Dad also turned 75 during this time but he insisted on cleaning up and building shelving for my garage during much of this time in the cold. He is awesome and he makes me so proud and appreciative on so many levels.- This is Chinese/Vietnamese lunar New Year and it has been incredible connecting with students this week on facebook, QQ (A chinese messaging service… facebook is blocked in China), and other media. We have been able to really connect.

Some Odds and Ends as Christmas Comes Along
Just some catching up on stuff that happened this week:
Had some positive news when I went in for some medical tests recently. I have a hearthy and strong heart. Praise the Lord.- Had a wonderful time with my dear friend from China, Wilson and we had the opportunity to play Tennis. We got to talk about all sorts of things, including his trip to Hawaii. It was a great opportunity to help him to see our worldview and how we see God in the beauty and complexity of the world. I sensed that we connected at a high level.
- Our T4T discipleship group went very well as Hiro, Sharon and I worked on sharing “our story” of how God affected our lives together. Pray as we start to share this story with friends and family that we know and we continue to work on refining it. Pray especially has Hiro prepares to return to Japan after graduation to get married that he can share his story with his family and friends.
- We took a bunch of students from UTA to see Christmas lights after a hearty dinner at a Chinese buffet and then went to the Phillips house for hot chocolate and cookies. One of the students remarked that the time at the Phillips where their girls played Christmas carols with their stringed instruments, we were cracking pecans with a fire place and we all were having fun, chatting was “the way a family time should be.” What a blessing that he saw a difference in their family.
The TCU Christmas party was wonderful with over 35 students hosted at the home of Dick and Dale Dodge. They got a wonderful taste of Christmas hospitality, enjoyed the Christmas story and were graced by Dick’s testimony. I got to know three Chinese students well. Interestingly, one of them, who identified himself as a believer is the son of a former seeker Chinese EMBA student from UTA who was affected by that ministry. What a neat opportunity to see the long term effect of what we do.
Lisa and I attended a party with our EMBA friends from this year. What a blessing it was. We truly felt like family with this group. The students led us as we sang Christ centered Christmas carols. That was incredible. I don’t think I have every felt such a sense of good with with a large group of students like I have with this group. Our daughter Charis even felt like a little sister to every one of them.

Turkey time with a Turk
(see pictures related to this post) There are so many things to be thankful. We had a great time especially remembering some of those things last week. We have four students over for thanksgiving: two from China, one from Turkey & one from India. Thanksgiving is the one day of the year that I do some of the cooking (The turkey and the stuffing – I’m proud of this…:-) ). This year we had a real treat. We were concerned because our Indian friend is a vegetarian and our Turkish friend doesn’t eat pork (usually sausage in the stuffing) so we asked our Indian friend to bring something that he enjoys eating in addition to the potatoes etc. We brought a wonderful vegetable curry with Indian Rice. It was very delicious, spicy but delicious. We will never forget this.
After a wonderful meal, we had everyone share something they are thankful for. It was neat hearing the student’s hearts. We learned about parents, friends here, opportunities. Our Turkish friend just got married in her country just before she came. Then my son took out the Risk board and we played a ruthless game of world domination…:-) One comment hit me. A student commented… “I feel like I am at home… eating dinner… playing games together… Oh I miss this.” (The jist of it…) Wow that was awesome.
The thanksgiving party went very well. We had nearly 100 students (see all our November pictures). Every year we are concerned about food and every year God brings in more than enough through the faithful giving of people at Fielder Road. It is always the feeding of the 5000 personified. In fact we had enough to give trays to the Arlington night shelter. Liz McMurry as always did a terrific job organizing the dinner and the evening. Members of more that one Fielder Road Baptist Chruch small group did a wonderful job of making the students feel very much at home. Praise the Lord.- The pictures say it all about the Thanksgiving dinner at the Moores. Praise the Lord for his faithfulness.

Vibrant Dancing in Christ, T4T and Thanksgiving is Coming
It’s been a couple of weeks since our last message. A ton has happened in the mean time. I will jump directly to the praise and prayer reports. I hope this message finds all of you well.
- The Austin trip to the Vibrant Dance of Faith and Science was challenging in many ways. I think most important thing that came out of it for Jonathan was that he was able to see that even really smart and educated people not only follow Jesus but have logical reasons why. I believe he also saw the limitation of science to explore some types of truth. Still, I appreciate your prayers. My heart aches with the stuff he is struggling with. I was once there. I trust in God’s grace and I understand what he needs to work through this himself and this is normal as a child grows into an adult and my role becomes one more of coach than player, but it still hurts sometimes.
The Fall festival at Christ Church Assembly of God was wonderful as 20 of us (Americans and international students) volunteered at this event. The students were truly amazed by it. One Chinese student was amazed that someone other than the government sponsored something like this for the community. He was touched. We have learned that in China volunteerism is in its infant stages and so this was a paradigm shifting activity for them.
Space weekend in Houston was probably our best yet. We took 50+ students and volunteers from UTA & SMU and we were hosted by our ISI team in Houston and Seabrook United Methodist Church. After visiting the space center, we were able to take pictures with an astronaut who spent more than a year up in the space station and then the students stayed with host families. I had the privledge of driving an Indian, two Russian, one Mexican and one Turkish students. They had a wonderful time! By the end of trip, there was sadness to leave their host families and I really felt like the people in our car were like family to us. God clearly spoke to them to show them his love for them.
The T4T discipleship group at TCU has started and we have met three times already (on Fridays). To see what God is going in the hearts of the different members of the group. It has been a real blessing. Further I am learning so much that can be applied to future groups.- Pray for the HUGE thanksgiving party this Saturday, November 20 at the UTA BSM hosted by Fielder Road Baptist Church for the UTA international students. Pray for great connections between people and the students.
Pray for TCU’s Thankgiving event hosted by McKinney Memorial Bible church also on the 20th as the students visit various homes.- Pray for Thanksgiving day itself as various students will be visiting home (including 4 at ours) and more than 30 at the Moores.
- One of our student families had a HUGE family loss. I can’t share more but please pray for them as they grieve.
Students and Host Families Listening to the Astronaut
Happy Birthday!

Some thoughts from the Heart of Lisa
Sitting here, thinking about what to put in this prayer update, I realize I could tell you about many events, such as the Big Howdy party that drew more than 500 international students, the annual Stephenville campout, where students got to stay on a real cowboy ranch and get a real Texas experience as well as a chance to hear the gospel, about the awesome Friday night groups in which many students are participating in Discovery Bible Study, as often as not led by a student, about the special training that some of the believing students are getting to develop them into Christian leaders, Roy & Tim’s scout adventure, our sharing at VBS at Calvary Church in California.
But instead I’d like to share about some things that God is teaching me lately. It mostly has to do with the nature of faith, believing God even when I don’t know what He’s up to. Lately some of the most challenging conversations I’ve had about God have been with my own kids. Our oldest is sorting through a lot of ideas right now, forming his world view. He’s being influenced by music and ideologies that dance around the truth (this is a really messed up world), but don’t offer a satisfying solution. He’s skeptical whether the Christian faith really offers that solution either. I’ve had to understand that no one comes to God unless the Father draws him. God doesn’t beckon us with logical arguments. . . he beckons us with authentic relationship.
I’m also being challenged in how to respond to Roy when I’m feeling the strain of our busy schedule. It’s so easy to lash out and be angry at our mates when we’re under stress, but I recently was at a women’s event where the speaker reminded us of the importance of the soft answer. It’s hard to work as a team when we are blaming each other. Instead, we (okay, I) need to be slower to take offense and quicker to affirm that I want to work together, not against each other.
