Testimony for trip to Houston in Spring

Back in the Spring, we helped one of our local ministry partners to reach out to some MBA students they were involved with by making our team in Houston available to help them plan a trip to NASA to meet an astronaut and stay with local host families. Here is a testimony from the team leader:

Roy I think it went great.  This group really enjoyed the trip and several told me that being in an American home was as exciting as the space tour.

I had a 30 min. conversation with “W” about “believers”, and etc.  I learned Wed night that he carries around with him a Gideon New Testament.  I will get him a Bi-Lingual Bible.  “C” picked up on the main teaching of the Tues Bible lunch and gave it back to the Pastor in a questions and answer exchange that he had with the students.  It shocked the pastor and thrilled him too in that he impulsively went over to “G” and kneeled in front of him.:) I got a posed picture of them before we left to board the bus.  I had a 5 x 7 made and will give it to “G.”  I had a disk made of my pictures.

Good questions were asked to the pastor and everyone was very attentive.  They loved the warmth and friendliness of their hosts.  Those in the “L” Church van had fun with “M.”  He was connecting with “F” and is inviting him out to his ranch in Johnson county. I will be interested to find out how many answer Jeff’s 5 questions.   I don’t expect many of them to write him because they are unsure about their written English.  They read it well but writing an opinion or thought will be hard for them.

God is working to reach international students in a big way through so many people.

Lisa With Friends at Urbana

February, 2007

Dear Ministry Partner,

What has God been doing in your life during the first 2 months of 2007? It has been a challenging time for us, and yet the Father’s care is constant and His blessings abundant. Following are a couple examples of what’s been happening with ISI in Dallas/Fort Worth.

Spring Howdy

As the Spring Semester came along, ISI, its partner ministries and volunteers worked together to help the many new students arriving at UTA. This culminated in the Spring Howdy Party where over 200 students from 22 countries got together to celebrate the beginning of spring semester with line dancing and great food donated by local churches and businesses.

In December and January, Roy got calls from some of the student organizations on campus because they were short handed in picking up students from the airport. Roy was able to mobilized friends, ministry partners and volunteers to help with very short notice.

Students Learn About Their Calling – Urbana Missions Conference

I (Lisa) have fond memories of my first Urbana experience in 2003, so I was excited about participating again this year. Altogether 30 of us from the Dallas/Fort Worth area, including ISI staff, volunteers and students loaded up in 2 church vans and 2 individual cars to make the 11-hour drive to St. Louis. This year the theme was “I Have a Calling.”

We were challenged from the book of Ephesians to see how God poured out His grace on us so that we could bring glory to Him through our lives. Different ones of our students were touched in different ways. Sam was challenged to pray for others and for the world, realizing that prayer is more than just asking God to bless us. Mari talked with reps from different missions organizations trying to see where God’s plan for her might be when she finishes school. Yoko, a recent graduate, made preliminary applications with a couple missions organizations. Irena participated in the HIV/AIDS track to learn more about how to minister to people with this devastating disease. All of us enjoyed the powerful worship.

There’s something electrifying about praising God with 22,000h 22,000

people in several different languages. It kind of reminds me of what heaven might be like. As for me, I really enjoyed learning about the technique of manuscript (inductive) Bible study. I’m looking forward to trying it out this year.

Thanks to the many churches and individuals who helped make the Urbana scholarships possible. Altogether we were able to give 17 scholarships or partial scholarships. Urbana is only 5 days, but it is powerful and life-changing. Your investment will bear fruit in eternity!

Prayer Needs

  • The transition of the day to day ministry at UTA from Roy to Ron Bunyard. This will enable Roy to focus more on his City Director responsibilities.
  • God’s perspective in dealing with electronics that all seem to be breaking down at the same time (frustrating—we need patience to deal with this!)
  • Roy’s work to get ISI recognized as an official organization at TCU (Texas Christian University).
  • Good teamwork with the students planning the Spring Break retreat. Wisdom for Roy as their coach.
  • Health for the family—T-6 and C-4 have had the flu recently!
  • Revitalization of Friday night Bible study. The current group is not showing much spiritual interest.
  • Wisdom for Lisa in dealing with a relationship problem with one of our students.
  • Adequate monthly income to meet our needs.

Blessings

  • Great time with our new Chinese friend Mr. Sun at the Maverick’s game.
  • Fantastic Houston trip last weekend hosted by ISI staff in Houston. Seven UTA students participated.
  • Jonathan will be getting his Arrow of Light (highest recognition in Cub Scouts) on Feb. 17.
  • Two recent large donations to help us make up last year’s deficit.
  • YOU. Yes, you are a blessing to us, more than you know. Every time you bring this ministry before the Father, you bless us in tremendous ways, and breakthroughs happen.

Remember that you can learn more about our ministry or make tax-deductible donations by visiting www.yabukibreeze.org.

Partnering with you to reach the Nations,

Roy & Lisa

Watching Baseball with one of “My Boys”

On Thursday I had the special privilege of taking my son T-8 to watch the Forth Worth Minor League team, the Cats for scouts night.

We had general admission tickets and at first, I thought that was a bummer. I was wrong. We had a blast and because we had general admission, we had freedom to move to several different places in the stadium. At first we watched the game from the first row in front of the opposing team’s (Wichita Wingnuts) bullpen but we moved to some chaise lounges behind the right field foul pole(See video below). I never enjoyed watching a game in such comfort. We also got a couple of BP (Batting Practice) balls and ate some great food. T-8 got one of the balls autographed by 8 people including the team mascot (Dodger the cat… the Cats were a Dodger affiliate when it started and have retired numbers of some of the be best players from my favorite team, the Dodgers, including Maury Wills, Duke Snider, etc. ). He had no idea who the people were (I don’t either) but he ran up to the Cat’s bullpen, ran to the locker room door, etc, just like a long time fan.

He also lit up the radar gun as some pitching display at 35 mph… He thinks he can be a Major league pitcher some day. Finally, we watched the movie “Angels in the Outfield” on the “Jumbotron” while sitting in center field after the game (part of scout night) until around 12 AM. T-8 was actually throwing his “non-autograph” ball around the field most of that time with another kid. To me this felt like one of those movie father-son evenings. I know he will never forget this and I really enjoyed watching him develop an interest in baseball.

This summer has been really good for re-connecting with all my kids… The neat thing too is that this re-connecting is affecting their spiritual life too. Incidentally, the Cats lost the game in 11 innings 0-1.

Our Young Missionary (but a scout no more)

Filed under J News, KidsNews, RoyNews

One of the hardest things about being a parent is allowing your kids to make decisions and do things on their own, allowing them more freedom to make choices and live with their consequences. Sometimes you see wisdom and maturity beyond your expectations, sometimes you aren’t sure… but trust the Lord anyway. This week there were two examples of this in our family revolving around our son J-11. J-11 is an amazing kid with amazing gifts and talents (all our kids are like that… ;-) ) that he is just learning about.

jonathanSand

Yesterday I sat in on a gathering of 70 somethings where Jonathan and the rest of the Amaraillo kids shared about their experiences on the mission trip. The videos and the sharing were incredible and really brought out how amazingly God used these 11 and 12 years old. I was so proud of Lisa and Jonathan. J-11 was so touched by the neediness of the kids they served. He also had the opportunity to share about leading his best friend to Christ the day after the mission trip at church and how it was the training for the mission trip that made it possible. I remember tha day so well… he was running late in rendezvousing with us and I was getting irritated and sent T-8 to the library to see what was going on… When T-8 told us, asking for further instruction, I couldn’t believe it… I was really humbled… and yet J-11… our quiet J-11 was doing this amazing thing… My prayer throughout the trip was that God will show J-11 his power through an experience like this and he did it right in front of our eyes. Back at the banquet for sexagenarians, one of the ladies said she was specifically praying for Jonathan(they passed out wristband before the trip as reminders) and how touched she was by what he shared… Wow!! God was using my Son… I was so proud of J-11 but more reminded of God’s faithfulness. Our son is growing up.

Earlier in the week, I was reminded of the same things in a different way. J-11 has been a Boy Scout for the last year and a half. He learned a lot about himself and what it takes to be a proactive leader through this experience. It was fun watching him grow after almost every camping trip. He also seemed to have a good time with the guys in the troop… He also had the privilege of leading some of his peers in his first few months of scouting.  The only thing he consistently voiced was that he really disliked camping and the monthly camping was difficult for him and he wanted to leave the scouts.

Jonathan Leading Prayer at Scout Court of HonorThe Boy Scouts rank system is built into two major sections. The first three ranks teach the boys the basics of scouting. The latter three ranks teach the boys more advanced skills and how to lead. I told Jonathan that it was important to at least finish the first half to get the basics. So, if once he finished this first class rank, he still felt the same way he had the freedom to leave, provided he found some other similar activities to replace it.

J-11 completed his First Class Rank this week. According to J-11, Monday marked the last meeting he planned on being a part of. (may we can convince him to go to the awards ceremony to get his badge) I was saddened some… I was really enjoying the experience and loved seeing his growth through the experience and the friends he was making. Still, I respect and feel like I need to honor his decision and his right to choose. This really marks an important time in our relationship as he seems to be making the first steps toward the independence of manhood and adulthood. Wow!

July 4 Parties

Filed under ISI TCU, ISI UTA, Praise

Yesterday was a good day with our international students though Lisa and I found ourselves split between two ministry sites for the second time in two weeks. Fourth of July is one time where we can share our culture with our international friends and they seem to enjoy it a lot.

UTA July 4 Party

Group picture from July 4 Party(pictures) Lisa with T-8 & C-5 is represented ISI as we worked in cooperation with the Cornerstone from Grace Community church to host a July 4 party at the farm of Steve Headland. There were a fair number of students and volunteers from both Grace and our Sunday School class at Fielder Road Baptist church. Lisa shared that all had a great time as they rode horses, swam and just enjoyed the country hospitality. Lisa metioned that Steve and family live in a barn and they were able to use the barn as a place to host the students well into the night. She also shared that there was a 360 degree view of fireworks as the local cities showed off their patriotism. Tim and Charis had a great time too and were greatly blessed.

TCU July 4 Party

(pictures) At the same time as the UTA July 4 Party was the TCU ISI July 4 party. Our good friend Babs who lives across the street from TCU hosted the party and a fair number of students and friends attended including Roy & J-11. Steve Mitsuhashi slaved at the grill as students from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, China, Taiwan, Korea, Afganistan, Japan, El Salvador, etc. enjoyed hot dogs and hamburgers and classic July 4 food. A friend of ours from Iraq brought a wonderful kurdish rice dish and it tasted so good. After hanging out and eating we enjoyed the fireworks from the Colonial Country club and the botanical gardens nearby. The oohs and aahs were everywhere.

Some friends at UTA July 4 partyI had a great conversation with a computer science major from Central America. We talked about all kinds of things from machine vision, to neural nets, artificial intelligence, what makes art art, to the metaphysical definition of a “person” from the perspective of catholics and protestant. We talked some about the Trinity and so many other things. He is a Catholic but he obviously enjoys reading the Bible and he attends our weekly bible study hosted by some local seminary students who are a part of our team.

I also talked with a Chinese student who apparently just recently became a Christian (we need to verify this) as we drove back and forth from the party. She had so many questions and was trying so hard to learn as much as she could about living as a Christian and Christian things. Jonathan was even able to share some stuff with her. It was really cool to see him opening up about different things. Her questions ran the gamut of is there one truth that the Bible teaches to what books we read, etc. It was really fun to be around a person so hungry to relate and learn.

What a Week – Amarillo Trip

(check out pictures) J-11 and I (Lisa) had a great week in Amarillo with 25 6th grade graduates from Fielder Road Baptist Church. Our church has a program to prepare kids from 3rd to 6th grade to go on this mission trip when they finish the 6th grade. To be honest, I wasn’t sure when Jonathan was a 3rd grader that he would be ready for this, but he was! In fact, all of our kids really stepped up and learned how to seize the day and not let opportunities go by that God puts in front of us to do things for him. I like what our children’s pastor says, that we aren’t building the church of tomorrow; it’s the church today.

Our kids helped Citychurch prepare 1400 sack lunches each day, which included a hot item, fresh popcorn, cookies, and fresh fruit. I can proudly say that I learned how to run a popcorn machine! Our kids ran a 4-day VBS which included music, games, a puppet show and Bible story. We also participated in going on bus routes to hand out lunches to the needy kids of Amarillo. For me, it was heartbreaking when we visited one really run-down apartment complex and ran out of lunches for all the kids that wanted one. A lot of our kids were shocked at how special it was when we included a toothbrush one day in the lunch sacks. You would have thought they won the lottery!

During the week we saw 15 kids led to Christ by the 6th graders. Even though J-11 didn’t lead someone to Christ on the trip, he was motivated to share with his best friend from school the next Sunday, and his friend prayed to receive Christ! It was exciting to see him have that kind of boldness. All in all, it was an eye-opening and very exhausting week, but well worth it.

What a week!!! – Niagara Trip Update

Last week was a very significant week for the Yabuki family on many counts and all of us came away having grown up a lot. I will post what happened in Niagara Falls and Lisa will later post about the Amarillo trip.

June08b 023

Niagara Trip

Roy went with Timothy and Charis to Niagara Falls, New York for the ISI National Staff Conference (check out our pictures). What an experience that was. Many were astonished that I(Roy) went on this trip alone with T-8 and C-5 while he also had responsibilities at the conference. Honestly, there were times I wondered the wisdom of this too. But in the end, I really felt God used this time to allow each of us to grow in so many ways.

The Conference

June08 039

The conference itself was very informative and marked some important themes that will affect ISI in the future. This was the first conference after the development of a five year plan the included the involvement of over 60 staff in its development. You could feel the buzz and the sense of empowerment that brought.

People seemed more energized. Further, typically, the speakers tell us that what we do is very strategic… but this time, we really got a sense of this in their talk itself. It seems that globalization is making ISI very relevant in the what God is doing in the world. China and India among other countries are exploding as players in the global market. It’s cool that the largest international student groups in the US are from these countries. Many of the past and future movers and shakers of this phenomenon have or will have experience as international students here in the US. Further, it seems that the international student trends in the US seems to foreshadow what is going to happen in the global marketplace. From our discussions at the conference, it seems that God is really positioning ISI to really impact the world. What an endorsement of what we are doing.

Technology Seminars

June08 050

I also had the special opportunity to lead several seminars on using technology in our ministry. The current generation of internet based software is really geared toward building and maintaining relationships. One of the key values in ISI international student ministry(ISM) is relationship. I would go as far as to say ISM is all about relationship. It behooves us to take advantage of what God had provided in the way of technological tools to supplement what we do person to person. There were several examples of staff using skype with webcam to lead a Bible study across 2-3 countries where people who met originally in the US could continue to do so even after students returned home. We also learned about how Facebook has become so much a part of how student interact and stay in touch. It was such a blessing to see the faces of staff people starting to “get it” and really see the potential of such tools to do their ministry better.

Kids’s conference

June08 009

T-8 and C-5 were part of a kids conference for the staff kids led by the Buffalo Dream Center. The Buffalo Dream Center is a

church [that] has become well known as a ministry that meets the needs of inner city families, going into crime infested neighborhoods – places other churches are afraid to go. The Buffalo Dream Center reaches thousands of people through various children’s outreaches, a mobile food pantry, a bus ministry, and many other programs that feed, clothe, and bring hope to those who have none.  The church has touched so many children that one-third of those attending the Sunday morning service are under the age of eighteen.

Many of the leaders of the kids conference were teens from the center. The kids got really close and seemed to really learn a lot. Here are some quotes from T-8…

“It was really fun, and I made some new friends that I really liked. Tr-8(from

June08 013

Oregon) & L-10(from California) were fun to hang out with… We learned about loving God and serving others. It was really worth my time in a big way.”

What a way for the kids to see as well as hear about the love of Christ and how much walking with Him is a full time thing. The friendships went beyond the conference time as the kids swam, toured, and even visited each others hotel rooms together. I know these kids have common experiences in life as children of ISI ministers and these relationships will serve them well.

Enjoying Niagara Falls

June08 062

C-5, T-8 and I were able to witness the power of Niagara Falls first hand. Our hotel with within walking distance from the American Falls. WOW! Such power! T-8 said it was a really “beautiful site…” We really sensed God’s glory there. The three of us were able to ride the Maid of the Mist boat which went right up to the US and Canadian falls and we really got a sense of the power of all that water falling down. Not the mention the fact we got really wet… One of the best parts was going through the Cave of the Winds to a platform that ran at the base of the American Falls. We were literally walking over the bottom of the falls. And when the wind shifted we felt the power of the water as some of it fell onto the platform and we got totally drenched… It is an experience we will likely never forget. Charis was so brave in all of this and went right up to the falls itself.

After the Conference

June08b 005

After the conference we went to stay with the family of my college roommate. Brian & Donna Bennett live with their kids J & C and big Rhodesian Ridgeback, Cora, in Lewiston, NY. Brian is a professor and head of the religion department at Niagara University. It was a huge blessing staying with them. While Charis was afraid of Cora at first, she learned how to trust her and even embraced Cora before we left. Timothy told me that we wanted to stay in New York because he wanted our family to be like Brian’s… Wow! Brian & Donna were off from their work as educators and so we were able to go to such places as the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester (where we saw C-5’s beloved Berenstain Bears town & sesame street) and we were even able to go into Canada to enjoy the Niagara whirlpool aerocar and the falls from the Canadian side. This was the first time Timothy left the United States. It was really cool.

June08b 017

The kids were also exposed to some new ways to play at the Bennetts as we were often outside and we played such fun games as horseshoes, hopscotch & ultimate frisbee.

Tim really had a thing for Ultimate and played well with the adults. It was awesome. Our time with the Bennetts was such a blessing and we are so thankful for their hospitality and most of all for who they are as a family.

Coming Home

The trip home was quite and ordeal and yet God taught me through my kids so much about trusting him. Our first flight from Buffalo to Detroit was delayed by an hour. Unfortunately we had only a 30 minute layover scheduled before our flight to Dallas. Talking with gate agents at Buffalo, all felt that we had no chance of making it to our flight and because we were on the last flight to Dallas, we would probably have to stay overnight in Detroit. We were all bummed. We were tired of traveling and were really looking forward to going home but I prepared the kids for what I thought was the inevitable.

June08c 001

As we approached Detroit, the pilot announced the estimated time of arrival and I figured out that the flight would arrive after our second flight was scheduled to leave. And according the the internet (I checked on my phone before we took off) the flight was scheduled as leaving on time. Further more, we were set to arrive in at gate A11 and our second flight was leaving from gate 59. I told the kids about what staying in Detroit would be like, that there was no hope that we would make it home on that day, let alone have our luggage. T-8 & C-5 reminded me, full of confidence, that we should pray because nothing was impossible with God. So I let them pray, ready to help them to deal with their disappointment when we arrived. When we got off our flight we found that our flight was indeed delayed… but was leaving in less than 5 minutes. So we ran and ran, C-5’s shoe fell off along the way, I pulled her by her arm having her walk around with one shoe in her hand, looking back it was embarrassing… Anyway, long story short… we arrived at the door of the plane as it was about to close. You would think I would learn by now. I told the kids our luggage would not make it. They prayed again and all our stuff made it… I really felt like the “spiritual leader” I was supposed to be…

Lessons Learned…

Besides the obvious lessons learned at the conference, we learned so much more on this trip. Some time ministry is not only about what we do, but what we learn in the process so we can be used more in the future. Here are a couple…

  • I was reminded by the trip home that God really loves us and is involved in even the intricate details of our lives, and what “faith like that of a Child” looks like.
  • I was reminded by the time with the kids at the conference that I needed to sometimes not do “ministry stuff” no matter how strategic for the sake of my family and the ministry to them. I was not able to “hang out” with the staff and do some other ministry responsibilities a well as I would have liked… but to see the kids and how much they grew because of time spent with them was truly worth it. This idea was rammed home with my time with the Bennetts. No family is perfect, but I was reminded about what a good family looked like and I was convicted by how little I have been actually playing and spending time with my kids lately in the name of “important” work. We really have a important and strategic ministry to and then through our family (this order cannot be reversed)
  • I was thrilled by how much T-8 and C-5 grew in this trip. I really put it on Tim to step up as “first boy” “in charge of the kids” on this trip while Jonathan was not there and he really lived up to the challenge. I saw maturity that I have never seen before. I really see a lot of my dad in Timothy. He has a humble take-charge lead-by-example quality that is really a blessing and he really sees things. He really needed the time to shine away from his brother. C-5 had many things she was afraid of on this trip before we left… she was afraid of the waterfall, swimming away from the wall of the pool, being away from mom… she overcame most of these during this trip and showed me how brave she could be. I also learned about her need for dad and regular affirmation of our love for her equal to our love for her brothers. I found out she struggles with being the youngest and feeling like she is loved less because of it and I learned how important it is to remind her of the lie that is every day.

This was quite a trip. I feel like God truly used it to re-energize me and our family for the upcoming year as a family and in ministry.
